Looking for a new home

The digital map offers the opportunity to explore the migratory routes of the first generation of Jews who arrived in Milan and Rome from the Middle East and North Africa during the twentieth century. This representation, which combines spatial and temporal dimensions, was developed on the basis of interviews collected in the Edoth collection, created to document the origins of the different “communities” (edoth in Hebrew) that today make up Italian Jewry.

The map makes it possible to reconstruct the complex individual and collective trajectories of migrants, highlighting both the countries of departure and the intermediate stops that preceded their arrival in Italy. The timeline shows how these movements continued from the postwar period through the 1980s, in a context marked by profound historical and political transformations affecting both shores of the Mediterranean.

The migrations reflect different motivations: political, linked to decolonization processes and regional conflicts, with particular attention to the evolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; economic, connected to the search for better opportunities; and personal, such as the choice to study abroad or private events that led them leave the country. These aspects are further explored in the Stories section, where it is possible to follow in detail the migratory routes together with the experiences of the individual interviewees.
